about

A Portland Oregon native, Nancy makes porcelain ceramic wares from her studio in the rolling hills of the coast range in Oregon. Pulling from her background in graphic design, photography, and collaborative projects, she builds functional stackable ceramic pieces that make a statement in your home.

My love for clay started in high school on the first day of ceramics class. All of us students were sitting around the wheels chatting. Our teacher, saying nothing, sat down at a wheel and started throwing. The class instantly went silent. In that moment we were all mesmerized – with grace and patience he turned a ball of clay into something functional and beautiful.

After high school, life for me took some twists and turns that all in some way contribute to my process and ceramic work. To name a few: I taught photography in an after-school arts program in Seattle, got a BFA at UW in Comparative History of Ideas and also in American Ethnic Studies, photographed bands (David Byrne!), studied monkeys in Indonesia, learned about multicultural education in South Africa, got an MFA in Graphic Design in Baltimore, taught color theory to artisans in India, and taught graphic design at MICA, WMU, and OSU… Through all of those adventures and career paths I worked with clay in the background. It wasn’t until 2015 that I made the space for my clay work to come forward and be my full-time job. I am incredibly thankful that I get to work with clay every day. Many thanks to those of you who support craft and us makers.
